The Hanaper was the financial department of the Chancery (although accountable to the Exchequer), which handled monies paid to the Crown as fees or fines for grants under the Great Seal. James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos, (1673-1744) became Clerk of the Hanaper of Chancery in 1728 (the reversionary rights to which office he had obtained in 1714).
